Would you like to have a friendly face to come home to? A companion to keep you company on a long day? Someone who listens without interrupting? Are you over 65 years of age? 

If you answered yes to any of these questions then Basset Hound Rescue of Alabama (BHRA) has a solution for you.

Senior Bassets for Senior People is a Basset Hound Rescue of Alabama (BHRA) initiative that connects mature basset hounds with older adults in our state.  

It is much hard for an older hound to be adopted. Everyone wants a puppy or young hound. It may take months or years for an older hound to become adopted. This program will encourage senior foster parents, 65 years or older, to become permanent caretakers of rescue basset hounds who are over eight years of age.  A senior basset hound is a loving companion for a mature adult.   

In past years, BHRA has been reluctant to take in bassets over eight years old since they are less likely to be adopted.  By having the Seniors for Seniors program in place, BHRA will not need to turn them away. They can be placed in caring, loving, permanent foster homes.  These senior hounds are well-behaved, calm, settled down and have much love to give. They love the couch and watching television. They also love a nice daily walk or car ride.  BHRA currently has three Senior hounds in this program with two more eligible hounds waiting for a Senior Foster. 

There is no cost to participate. BHRA will take care of medical expenses, monthly heartworm and flea preventive and will assist with food when needed, alleviating common financial concerns. 

Senior foster parents go through the same training process that the other fosters do, including a home visit with BHRA’s Foster Coordinator or assistant. Fosters are asked to attend adoption days with their senior foster hound.  They will occasionally be asked to transport their foster pet to one of the BHRA participating vets as needed. These activities also provide a solution to the isolation many mature adults face. Contact FosterCoordinator@bhra.org or treasurer@bhra.org.
