Hi BHRA,

About a year ago we adopted "Yogi" from the rescue.  We wanted to send a note letting you know that he is doing very well.  He was so afraid when I first picked him up in Alabama.  He has come such a long way.  He and his younger (but much larger) brother "Gus" are the best of friends.  He has been a great addition to the family.  We just moved from Georgia to Alaska, and on the road trip we learned that Yogi's 2 favorite things in the world are walks on the beach and pizza.  Yogi has been across 26 states - he loves to travel. Thank you so much for adopting him out to us.

Thanks,

Stephanie Pollen

Dear BHRA,

Today as I look at our newest addition I am so grateful for all of the volunteers who have helped our fur babies. In April of this year we adopted Marti, the juvenile we like to call her. Marti is very active and so we decided maybe Marti needed a playmate so we searched BHRA's website and just did not find a hound that would meet our needs so we gave Robbie a call. We said we would be patient but if she found a hound that would be compatible in our lively (We have 3 children under age 8) household to please call us. After information on several hounds that just did not seem compatible Robbie sent us an email from a foster family about Fredrika, a hound that had not been placed on the website yet. We learned she had been abused but did not seem aggressive. She was a little afraid of people but would warm up to you rather quickly. She has already had several health issues but was healthy now. When we saw her beautiful pictures we knew we had to help her. Our newest baby was on the way. She whined the whole way, when we got her to our home she immediately went to a corner and would not come out. She took to me rather quickly after I sat in her corner with her until she was ready to come out. My husband scared her, she would let him touch her but she would shake fiercely. It has been 5 weeks since that day, in these last 5 weeks Fredrika, now Trixey, has warmed up to Greg (he gives her lots of treats). Trixey now will run outside with Marti and play. Marti is so happy to have a playmate and she really takes care of Trixey. We do have to be careful if someone raises their voice to loud she will go back to her corner, if strange people come in the yard she will bark and howl like a 400 lb dog. She chased the bug man from the yard.......... Trixey eats like there is no more food and has put on some weight. She loves the children and lets them pet and love on her. When she has had enough she will let out a low growl and the children know to back off.  Trixey has never had an accident in the house and sleeps all night long without moving (on the bed of course!) We just wanted to thank everyone who took care of our baby at some point, Chris and April for taking such great care of her and for Robbie helping find her!

Much love, Kristine, Greg, Hunter, Parker, Jordan, Marti and Trixey

Hi!

We just wanted to update everyone who was involved with the care of Andi on how she is doing!

We adopted Andi, a slightly older hound, in September 2005 and she has done great ever since. Andi is the Queen of our home and took over the disciplining of our younger male, Apache. They get along wonderfully and have a ton of fun together. Andi is still the world's reigning champion at counter cruising and sofa/recliner lounging. If there is food to be found, Andi will find it and if there is an unoccupied chair that needs warming, Andi will sit in it! Andi still believes that she will be a long distance walker someday and gets VERY excited when the leash comes out. However, five or ten minutes into a walk she has her doubts and requires a little extra encouragement to keep walking. She has a new baby human in her life and tolerates him as a minor annoyance that doesn't deserve too much attention. The energy required to keep up with a one-year-old human is better left to her younger brother- Andi prefers to watch, that is if she isn't sleeping.

Thank you to everyone who nursed our Andi back to health and gave her the chance to have a new start. She fits our family perfectly-flaws and everything- and is a blessing to us everyday.
We encourage everyone who is looking to adopt a rescue hound to do so with enthusium and confidence that they are making a difference to a loving hound in need!

Thanks to all! Jessica, Jeremy and Jacob Brown (Andi and Apache, too!)

We adopted Baxter (formerly Caesar, formerly Clyde) Clyde Skelley from BHRA on Oct. 1, 2005. He has added such joy to our lives. Baxter is just the best dog. He sleeps, oh, about 23 hours of the day, and uses the other hour to take his daily walk and bark at bugs. He loves to sit in his chair and watch TV, and his picture was featured in the Tennessean newspaper as their Pet of the Week, in Sept. 06! He has been nothing but loving with our toddler, Cooper, and shows remarkable patience when Cooper tugs on his tail.
We never thought that we would be able to love another hound dog after our beloved Jake passed away, but Baxter has been such a blessing. Thank you so much to BHRA and to Baxter's foster mom, Linda Wilson, for bringing him into our lives!

Everyday is just a little more blessed because Little Nikki is in our life.
Of course, we stumble with a few obstacles (housetraining), but who cares, I
buy carpet cleaner direct from the Co.,  and soon we will rid ourselves of
the wall to wall anyway.  Mostly, I have to thank you so much for letting us
adopt your little sweet angel.  She has become my Mom's favorite dog EVER,
and Mom has loved a lot of dogs to be sure.  However, right now, Nikki  is
the medicine Mom really needed... Mom is 79, cancer survivor and lost Dad in
2001, just shy of 50 year anniversary.  When I get a little more flush in my wallet, I
will not forget you, ever.

(I keep hoping to win the lotto, and if I ever do, a lot of that will go to
basset  rescue everywhere!!!)

God Bless and many thanks

We adopted Owen last October.  His story was a sad one.  Owen was hit and badly injured by a car.  Someone actually drove by him for 2 or 3 consecutive days and assumed him to be dead, until he eventually saw him move!  Owen’s entire side was ripped open and had his ears filled with maggots.  Owen was then sent to an animal shelter, where BHRA eventually recovered him before he was put down.  Owen was then nursed back to health by the folks at BHRA.  Since we adopted him, his scars have continued to heal and his energy continues to increase.  Owen even walks about 2 miles per day.  He has been a great pet and a good friend to our young basset, Maxwell.  Owen plays with Maxwell constantly, although sometimes he is very reluctant and just seems to be humoring his friend.  We couldn’t ask for a better pet.  In fact, Owen even snitches (barks repeatedly) when Maxwell is doing something bad (getting into the trash can)!  Oh yeah, I almost forgot that Owen’s distinguishing feature is his “nub,” or what was left of his tail after it was cut off due to his accident.  We are happy to have Owen and his champion sleeping ability and want to thank BHRA for finding us such a good pet.

This is Oliver. We adopted him 2 years ago in February after the loss of our Rotweiler, Heidi. We also had a 5 year old basset at the time that was very lonesome after Heidi died. We looked at the web site and fell in love with Oliver. After we inquired about him we found out that he was actually only about 30 miles from where we lived and was being fostered in the home of one of the managers at the restaurant where our daughter worked. (Talk about small worlds).

As you can see from the picture, Oliver has adjusted well. He is our loveable Ollie Bollie. His brother Flash is happy to have a companion. The two of them are quite a pair. They love to play and occasionally get into trouble together. Oliver enjoys sleeping in bed with momma and daddy and brother Flash. He goes for walks but prefers rides on Sunday afternoon. We are so glad to have him and it breaks our hearts to think of him alone wandering the streets. He is such a loving boy. Every afternoon the boys go next door to me maw’s house for a treat. He does love food.

Adopting has been a wonderful experience that I would recommend it to anyone considering it. There are so many dogs out there who need and deserve a loving home.

Greetings BHRA,

Chuck came into our lives a few days before the Superbowl of 2006 and has been delighting everyone he comes into contact with ever since.  Despite exhibiting the usual Basset Hound characteristics (knocking over the trash, getting on the counters, taking food off plates), he is quite the comedian.  Originally his name was Chuckie, but I decided to shorten it to Chuck in honor of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Chuck Noll, I think it fits nicely, as does his prized Steelers collar he currently sports.  Of course in our house everyone gets a nickname, and "Buggles" seems to fit Chuck nicely.  I already had a 3 yr old chocolate Lab named Dixie and they are now best friends, constantly chasing each other throughout our home, rolling on the floor and fighting for everyone's attention.  My girlfriend, Ginny can't get enough of him, and he definitely has chosen her as his favorite person beyond me, and I think I am starting to lose that battle.  He has settled into a routine that includes going to the park, eating, and sleeping, and I smile every time I look at his face.
I would like to thank everyone at BHRA that helped bring Buggles into our lives, and I sincerely support the work you do.  I couldn't imagine life without him, even though he can be a bit of a terrorist sometimes....... Take care and good luck to all the other families.....

We thought that you might like to see how Gretchen is doing at her new home. She is doing great. She loves her new family and loves to play with the boys, Chris, Corey and Kyle. She has her own bed but she prefers to sleep any where else as long as it is with someone. She chases the cat around the house and play with our other baby Diamond, lab pup. She has really taken up with us and has no problems at all. We go for walks all around the neighbor hood, she really likes it when it is time to walk. She wags her tail and jumps around. When I get home from work she is at the door waiting for me with a big kiss and all the love she can give. Thank you so much BHRA. Gretchen finally has a home were she is loved with all our hearts and she gives us all her love right back.

Hello to my friends and former caregivers.  I have been with my new family since Christmas 2005.  I have settled in and enjoy my new life with my new family.  My former foster parents used to call me "grandma," and I proudly keep up the reputation by sleeping as much as I can.  My parents, brother and sisters give the worlds greatest belly rubs.  They occasionally forget that I need A LOT of bellyrubs, so I happily remind them by laying on my back demanding a rubdown.  My sisters enjoy playing dress-up as you can see from my tutu and fairy wings.  I don't mind until they start putting on the hats.  I get to travel a lot to the gulf coast to visit my grandparents, I LOVE car rides.  Occasionally I get to travel to Kansas City where my mom is from.  Like any gal I love to go to the salon (Pet Smart), and strut myself in front of the boys.  Mom and Dad have been talking about getting a brother or sister, but until then I will enjoy challenging mom for the role of being the "Diva" of the house.

Morgan (Little Nikki) came into our home and life on April 28, 2007. There are not enough words to say how much we love her, and she has really brought so much joy to us. In 2005 we rescued an 8 month old boy from Tri-State basset rescue, and these two have bonded like no tomorrow. She has given him the puppy life he never had, and the became best friends from day one. We are so grateful to BHRA for letting us adopt Morgan. She is truly a blessing in our life.

Here is little Elleigh with her new little people.  Looks like she is living the high life!

Sylvie (Now Called Saban)

5/17/07

Just writing a follow up on Sylvie (new name Saban).  She has come right into our home and taken over.  As you can see by the pictures she not only won over our hearts but also her human dad's chair!  She is the most passive, gentle and loving dog ever.  She never gave our cat a second look and has finally won him over and gained his trust.  Saban loves our children and takes pride in waking them up in the mornings with a face-full of licks.  She also loves hiding her things, whether it be dog food, treats, or toys.  I am constantly finding "treasures" under pillows, behind curtains and in the laundry.  Saban has truly become a member of our family.

Just a follow up on the adoption of our precious "HAZEL" new name BREA. She has adjusted so well. Brea is in control of the house and our 7 year old Bassett "BAXTER" She doesn't want him to come near her granny or granddaddy as we refer to ourselves. Brea tries to get him to play but he just gives her a look like - I don't think so. She sleeps in the bed with granny & granddaddy. I took her to the door to potty this morning ,it was raining. She ran out & came back fast without pottying. She finally went to the edge of the porch.
During her bath Saturday , she raised her legs one at a time to be rinsed off. The pet we lost to the tainted dog food is the only dog I had ever seen do this before. Brea has her own clothes basket of toys that she empties every time we put them up. She still loves her belly rubbed. She does not like to see her granny getting ready for work. Fortunately I get to drop by during the day for a few minutes. She loves kisses from granny but hates to see granny coming towards her with a wash cloth because she knows granny is going to wash her ears.
Brea loves to eat but she's getting a little pudgy. She hides her doggie bones all over the house but Baxter usually finds them.
Brea is one of the sweetest, most precious dogs that I have ever seen and we are so blessed to have her as a member of our family. Here is a picture of Brea and her new best buddy, Baxter checking out the action outside.

Hi,

I just wanted to update everyone on Marti! She is doing great here! She has come right in and taken over our lives. She loves the children and all their attention. When one of them cries she tackles them and licks them until they stop. She has taken over the bed and sleeps through the night, and then sometimes we have to coax her to get up. She is a great car rider (even better than the children) she visited the beach and her human great grandma in Florida this week. I am sending a picture of her with the children on the beach. She is not eating alot.... We took her to the vet and he gave her a clean bill of health, we switched her to Bil-Jac food and she seems to eat that better. Bil-Jac was one of the few not recalled, she has a craving for table food which we are trying our hardest not to allow!! We had a fence put in while on vacation, she still will not leave our side. Thanks to everyone who took such great care of her before she found us!!

Berrie has been with us for almost 18 months.  She is quite a character and makes us laugh every day.  She is certainly the queen of the castle (and its' watchdog too.)  As you can see from the photo, she is very talented at relaxing.

Melanie and sweet Bella did our home visit in preparation for Berrie's adoption.  What a great pair.

I would encourage anyone considering rescuing a hound to follow their heart.  We're glad we did!

I adopted Bella (formerly known as Beulah) three years ago today from BHRA...I still remember driving to Mobile to pick her up with my mom and Bear. Janiece and Reba did our home visit in Pensacola:) On the menu tonight, doggie oreo cookies from Three Dog Bakery and a yummy layer cake of chicken hearts and beef (Tammy claims this cannot be called a "cake"!)  I make this for every furkid's birthday and they LOVE it:)

"Happy Birthday to me!"
