Who are we
and where are we?
We are a private, not-for-profit, all volunteer organization working
in collaboration with nationwide basset rescue organizations in the
interest of finding the best possible homes for homeless hounds!
Our medical intake is based in the Birmingham and Calera, Alabama
areas; however, our services extend throughout the state, and our
dogs are fostered throughout Alabama in volunteer homes. We use a
variety of volunteer resources to help us with home visits and for
help with transporting our bassets to their foster and forever
homes. We also are always looking for volunteers to help with these
transports, so if you have some spare time and would like to help,
please contact our home visit and/or transportation coordinators
(found on our contacts page).
What do we do?
Simply put…we take in basset hounds that need homes. They come to
us from shelters, veterinary clinics, or individuals who either own
or have found bassets they cannot keep. We provide essential
medical care to include vaccinations, spay or neuter and even
heartworm treatment, if needed. We treat all known medical problems
and completely rehabilitate any adoptable dog and place it in a
foster home, preparing each dog for a "forever home."
How may our
bassets be adopted?
We require that any family wishing to adopt submit an adoption
application (found on our website), and a phone or e-mail
"interview" is done. One of our volunteers will do a home visit,
making sure that the basset's home will be safe and comfortable with
a securely fenced yard (or in certain circumstances, the dog will be
leash-walked several times a day) and look for many other
features. If you're in another state, we will work with your local
basset rescue organization or other rescue contacts to set up your
home visit. We require that our bassets be inside dogs, sleeping
inside and being a part of the family. If a family works, in some
circumstances it may be acceptable for the dog to be outside during
the day, with adequate protection from heat and inclement weather.
If the application is local to us, we can arrange for the family to
meet the basset. On some occasions, we may arrange for the basset
to go to its potential new home on a trial visit to evaluate how it
will interact with the family, other pets, or children. If a family
is approved for adoption, a (tax-deductible non refundable) donation
to BHRA
(view fees) is required, and an Adoption Agreement is signed. If you
live 200 miles or more away from Birmingham, we also ask that you
sign a long distance agreement.
Both agreements are also found on our website for review.
How can the
bassets available for adoption be seen?
We strongly encourage you to contact the foster family of any basset
on our site that may interest you. Ask questions…describe your
family, working hours and home situation, and inquire whether the
foster thinks it’s a good match (after all, they know their foster
dog better than the rest of us). If you are located near the foster
home, an appointment may be made to see the bassets that will be
brought from their foster homes to a mutually convenient public
meeting place. If you are further away but wish to make the drive,
contact the foster to arrange a good time for both of you.
How can I find
out more?
If you would like more information about any basset on our
"Available for Adoption" pages, we urge you to phone or e-mail the
foster family. Do keep in mind that at any time, more than one
application may be received for an individual basset, and the
adoption itself must always be approved by our Adoption
Coordinator, never the foster family. Our Adoption Coordinator
can advise whether other applications are pending on a particular
dog.
Can’t adopt but
would like to help with a foster basset’s care?
If your situation simply is such that you can’t adopt a basset but
would like to help, especially with one that has special needs, we
welcome you to do just that! We gladly accept “sponsors” for any
basset. With your financial contribution, we’ll list you on the
website as a sponsor for any basset that may tug at your
heartstrings. We’ll email you regularly about its needs, progress,
and adoption status. Just email our
Adoptions Coordinator about your interest, and we’ll get you set
up right away! This way you can in a way “adopt” on a temporary
basis, without actually bringing a new dog into your home.
